CarMax, the nation’s largest used-car retailer with 116 locations, has overlooked the St. Louis area since its founding in 1993. Its only Missouri location is in Independence.
With $10 billion in annual sales, the company that operates used-car “superstores” has now identified St. Louis as a growth market, and several stores are in the pipeline.
CarMax already has acquired land at 4990 North Service Road in St. Peters, 6201 South Lindbergh in unincorporated St. Louis County and 1254 Central Park Drive in O’Fallon, Ill., for new locations. “We look for areas that tend to be in a growing retail market or that are located in auto malls, or auto rows,” said CarMax spokeswoman Elia Imler. Since its founding, the company has sold more than 4 million vehicles.
Unlike most used-car retailers, CarMax, based in Richmond, Va., has upfront pricing that it says takes away the need to haggle.
