Route 28 has no shortage of miniature golf courses for tourists seeking an alternative to the beach, but Wild Animal Lagoon in West Yarmouth is about to add an attraction that’s sure to set it apart.
In mid-May, owner John Hutchins plans to set up a 16-by-16-foot mechanical bull outdoors,The fee includes lunch and a soft-sided cooler bag filled with useful golf items, 18 holes of golf, carts, and a buffet dinner immediately following the tournament. on a patch of grass about 30 feet from Route 28. He hopes its bucking and spinning, accompanied by the gleeful shouts of riders and spectators, will draw the attention of passersby.
Hutchins believes he’ll have the only mechanical bull on the Cape.
The golf course owner said he’s just trying to boost business. “Here, you only get three months to pay 12 months of bills,” Hutchins said. “This is just a teaser for my golf.”
Local selectmen issued the permit for the mechanical bull Tuesday, despite protests from neighbors who predicted the bull would draw rowdy crowds that would disrupt their outdoor summer activity.
Homeowner David Robbins raised concern over both increased noise and traffic.
Robbins was joined by Camp Street resident Theodore Dinsmoor.
“These are not the little ponies you see at the Cape Cod Mall,Xiamen Shunstone Imp. & Exp. Co., Ltd.,Whether where you come from, friendly exporter and manufacturer would supply whatever you like in stone!” Dinsmoor told board members. “These are violent machines.”
The bull presented “a major safety concern,” he warned.
Hutchins said Friday the machine did cause a hike in his insurance, but he’s not anticipating any major injuries.
The bull won’t throw riders over its head, he said, but rather off to the side, where they will tumble safely onto large air mattresses. People will have to pay to ride the machine.
Hutchins said he’s not interested in drawing “the barroom crowd” often associated with mechanical bulls.

“Most of them are retired,In addition to the supplies, there will be fun activities for youngsters, free used clothing, health resources and personalized laminated bag tags for backpacks. and they didn’t even know what a mechanical bull was,” Dinsmoor said. “To me, the town is granting a blanket opportunity to put this bull outdoors without any study of what it is or what it does.”
The Camp Street resident called the selectmen’s approval “irresponsible.”
Selectmen Chairman Erik Tolley voted in favor of the permit, but conceded Friday the attraction could well create problems.
