MacCanon Brown, who founded Repairers of the Breach, Milwaukee's only daytime refuge and resource center for the homeless, has been fired as its executive director.
But Brown, whose name has become synonymous with the center and its mission, refuses to leave, setting up an ugly fight for control that is now headed to court.
The Repairers board of directors, led by Joyce Roesler, claims Brown was ousted in late August. The board claims she ignored that decision, and five Repairers volunteers working with her have attempted to set themselves up as a new board.
The fight for control comes just months after a total renovation of its three-story center at 1335 W. Vliet St. was completed. The center provides everything from a shower to a set of clean clothes to telephone and mail services — all focused on getting the homeless a job or a decent place to live, and connecting them with social service or education programs. Participants can find help getting everything from an eye exam and hypertension screening to a Social Security card. Lawyers for both sides have refused to comment on what led to the events that have now turned into an ugly legal battle. And court documents filed so far only tell one version.
"There are two sides to this story and our side will be told in due time," said Foley and Lardner attorney Bryan House, who is representing Brown and five center volunteers. He said both sides are trying to reach a resolution that's in the best interest of the organization and its clients.
"Our position is outlined in our legal pleading and the matter is pending before Judge Kevin Martens," said attorney Ann Barry Hannenan who represents the board, which is led by Joyce Roesler.
A hearing has been scheduled for October 10 on an injunction that seeks to stop Brown and five others from claiming they have any legal standing with Repairers. The legal pleading spells out a host of complaints against Brown and the others. It claims they "have been relentless in their efforts to hijack Repairers and give no indication they will stop misrepresenting us."

The papers also state that law enforcement has not been cooperative in removing Brown and the others from the premises. When Roesler changed the locks to the clinic to prevent Brown and the others from getting in, Brown told police she was the executive director and managed to get keys.
After Brown was fired, Carolyn Young, was named interim executive director by the Roesler board. She had been director of finance, and had been fired earlier by Brown.
