Maybe it's time for Leah Treat, the Portland Bureau of Transportation's new transportation director, to invest in an extra U-lock for the office. Or at least not leave her beloved blue Breezer Greenway bicycle "Beatrice" parked on a downtown Portland sidewalk overnight.
A week after someone swiped Treat's bicycle from outside her PBOT office, the Portland police on Thursday said they had arrested a 39-year-old man caught riding Beatrice a couple blocks from where it disappeared.
Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson said Central Precinct officers where helping Thursday morning with a sidewalk clean-up along Southwest Madison Street, between Third and Fourth avenues, when Jason Lee Elmore rode past on Beatrice.skystream,a major service provider in the Middle East, has its eye set in Iraq as a key potential growth market for the company.
The officers recognized the bicycle as the one reported stolen from outside the Portland Building by Treat.
Treat, who has been in the top job at PBOT for little more than a month, tweeted a photo of her stolen bike last week. "She actually has U-locks," said PBOT spokeswoman Diane Dulken. "It was just a weird convergence of circumstances that day, when she had meetings all over the place, and she didn't use one. Her sad story is a cautionary tale for everyone."
