In 2010, seven years after founding the company, Ashburn shifted his focus from barbecue sauces to drink mixes, thinking the latter were used more often by restaurants and consumers.
The move paid off. The Bloody Mary add-ons now deliver the majority of sales of Ashburn’s products.
Ashburn won’t serve up sales numbers, but he says they have continued growing since he started the company. But most of Ashburn’s money comes not from making his products, but from bottling the sauces of about 75 other companies in his small manufacturing facility near Oceana Naval Air Station.
He turns out 1,000 to 4,000 bottles a day. Along the way, he freely uncorks the knowledge he has gained in the business.
Simply Panache Products in Hampton has made its Mango Mango preserves at Ashburn’s small plant for a year and a half.
When Simply Panache was looking for shrink-wrap packaging, “he told me exactly what to get and how we could get it,” partner Lakesha Brown-Renfro says. “He’s willing to help people along the way, to tell them about the industry and also with the preparation of their product.” Proving, too, that nice guys can rise to the top.
