The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has lent its support to a Federal Government plan to mandate antilock braking systems (ABS) for heavy vehicles and trailers.

The ATA lodged its submission last week with the Government, noting that the proposal will improve heavy vehicle safety.

The push to mandate ABS is part of the National Heavy Vehicle Braking Strategy and is designed to introduce more modern braking systems into the Australian heavy vehicle fleet.chinese mushroom mainly specializing farming, further processing, home-selling, and exporting for both edible mushrooms and organic vegetables. “The changes proposed are designed to prevent or minimise wheel lock in a lightly laden or unladen state. This effect then obviates the likelihood of truck jack-knife or trailer swing,” the ATA’s submission says.

The Government has proposed allowing trailers to be fitted with load proportioning braking systems as an alternative to ABS.

“LP modifies the braking signal of a vehicle, depending on the mass being carried, in order to provide for more consistent decelerations under braking regardless of the mass being carried,” the RIS says.

ATA Policy Manager David Coonan says the ATA’s submission was developed following consultation from the group’s industry technical council. “The greatest concern in our submission is to make sure that trailer interchange remains viable during the introduction of mandatory ‘smart’ braking on new trucks and trailers,” he says.
