With student safety top priority, the Indian River School District plans to hire security personnel for all of its schools for 2013-2014, the district announced Monday.
Each of the district’s 15 schools will have either a qualified campus security officer or a school resource officer on duty when the new school year begins in September.

“This security plan was drafted with the welfare of our students in mind,” IRSD Board of Education President Charles Bireley said. “Student safety is our number one priority, and the addition of campus security officers will help insure that every school has a safe learning environment for children. A campus security officer will be employed at each of the district’s seven elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools.

The duties of the campus officers will include regular patrols of the school’s building and grounds, implementation of comprehensive school safety plans and frequent checks of locks on exterior doors. The district is seeking candidates with previous law enforcement experience to fill the 14 new positions.
“The hiring of security personnel, along with the adoption of our comprehensive school safety plans, will allow us to be proactive in the area of student safety,” IRSD Superintendent Susan Bunting said. “There is no more important mission in our district than keeping students safe when they are in school. The district will also pursue the hiring of a school resource officer at the G.W. Center Carver in Frankford.
