It’s getting to be the time of the year when there are big, slow-moving machines on the road that are tough to get around and might turn at places where you wouldn’t expect.
That sums up what longtime farmer Karl Probst said he sees as the main things to think about when he and other farmers start to get out their tractors and planters and travel rural roads from one field to another.

Probst said the recent rains will probably mean it will be at least later this week before farmers can start their field work. He said he thinks most farmers are “pretty cognizant” about their blocking traffic but echoed Probst in saying there are only certain places farmers can move to the side to let others pass.
“That goes back to being patient,” Cox said.
Though his office hasn’t responded to any farm machinery accidents recently, Cox said he remembers someone rear-ending a tractor and another trying to pass a tractor and cutting back too soon and hitting the machine.
Hilly areas and others with no-passing zones where visibility ahead is limited are places to be especially careful, Cox added.
He also said it’s a “recipe for disaster” if a motorist tries to pass a farm implement when the farmer is making a left hand turn. And those might not be just at roadways and drives, as farmers sometimes enter fields at places where there are no visible entrances, he said.
Cox urged farmers to use hand signals or on board turn signals, something Probst said he does but that motorists still sometimes don’t see. Probst said the other drivers’ “first thought” is to try to pass and he tries to let them around first or move to the middle of the road so they can’t pass, he said.
“You kind of got to help them drive their vehicles,” he said.

Cox said farmers can legally use public roads for their machinery without license plates or similar requirements for other vehicles because they’re classified as “implements of husbandry.” He said they need to have the orange triangular “slow-moving vehicle” emblem on the back for daytime driving and lights for use at night.
