Kimaru said that the location of the weighing machines was also contributing to the jam since drivers have to cross to the right side of the road where the machines are located. KeNHA’s supervisor at the facility Vinscon Gitari, confirmed that the traffic snarl up was as a result of many truck arriving for clearance at the same time. “What you see is a high number of trucks that were cleared in Mariakani within the week arriving en masse. Gitaru however insisted that most complaints from the drivers, most of whom were non-compliant, were due to the fact that they were very strict.
Mohammed Twariq, a driver said that he had spent almost four hours between Athi river junction and the weighbridge and was not expecting to be cleared yet because of the slow pace that the clearance official; were conducting the exercise.
“It took me three days to have my clearance done at Mariakani. It is sad that I will spend another two or more days to have the clearance done here before heading to Gilgil to go through the same ordeal. The government ought to come up with a mechanism to correct this,” Mohammed lamented.
