Aviation experts have not found any significant mechanical factors in the wreckage of an R22 helicopter that crashed killing the pilot last year, but the investigation could still take another eight months.

The crash investigation could take another six to eight months, the Civil Aviation Authority said yesterday.

Investigators spent four days at the crash site examining the wreckage of ZK-HCG before removing the chopper for independent testing.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission was notified but elected not to open an inquiry, so the crash is being handled entirely by the authority.Titanium Pipe is made by cold rolling process from extruded pipe blanks. They are widely used in heat exchangers and off-shore equipment.

Authority corporate communications manager Mike Richards said the investigation could easily take another six to eight months based on the amount of work involved.

A safety investigation did not seek to apportion blame but aimed to gain insight into air accidents and pass on any lessons to the aviation industry to prevent any repeats, he said.

"With regards to progress [of the] accident investigation to date, so far no significant contributory mechanical factors have been found with the helicopter.

"Further aspects currently being investigated are: environmental [meteorological] conditions existing at the time,profile projector is a shop tool used by designers and quality control technicians to view the profile of small machined parts as magnified image on screen. pilot experience, and research into other similar R22 accidents," he said.

The well-respected pilot and instructor notched up more than 30 years' flying experience and was the sole occupant in the R22 when it crashed on November 8 in the Criffel Range en route from Wanaka Airport to Queenstown.
