The Memphis Fire Department is the first metropolitan fire department in the U.S. to outfit its frontline personnel with the LUCAS mechanical CPR device, which provides continual chest compressions to adult cardiac arrest victims. Memphis will put LUCAS on each of its 36 frontline ambulances.

“I’ve never seen anything that the firefighters are clamoring for like this device,” said Gary Ludwig, deputy chief of EMS. “We’ve noticed already a 42% increase in spontaneous circulation for patients that we used it on.vending machine lock,Vendo t-handle parts, Dixie Narco parts for T-handles, parts for snack vending machines, tubular style, security style, Pagoda.”

“We went to the Assisi Foundation here in Memphis, and they gave us $240,000 to add more devices,” Ludwig said.

Besides the medical benefits to the patient, Ludwig said that there’s a safety factor for the EMS personnel riding in the back of the ambulance. Typically firefighters have to stop CPR when moving a patient up or down stairs on a stretcher and usually have difficulty performing efficient CPR in the back of a moving ambulance. Additionally, firefighters are safer when they can be seat belted in the back of a moving ambulance, instead of standing up doing CPR.

Ludwig recalled one recent incident where the firefighters had to stand up a patient on a backboard to get him out the door. The LUCAS device was able to continue CPR in spite of the maneuvering required to leave the patient’s house.

Studies have shown that the mechanical devices provide better CPR than humans and increases the survival rate from a cardiac arrest as a result of the more efficient CPR.Pcb board It is estimated that approximately 500,000 people suffer a sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital each year in the United States.
